|SOUTH PORTLAND - Richard F. (Dick) Vail, 80, passed away July 6, 2015. Dick was born in Houlton, ME on June 19, 1935, son of Joel J. and Alice (Ball) Vail.|
Dick grew up in Milo, Maine. During his Junior year in High School he was a member of the basketball team that won the state championship and went on to play in the New England's at Boston Garden. Hed laugh telling stories of how he and his friends from Milo told the other players how they traveled down from Maine by stage coach and dog sleds. He graduated from Milo High School in 1953. In recent years Dick enjoyed returning to Milo for school reunions.
Dick met his wife Barbara in Portland and they were married September 25, 1954. They raised seven children together and celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary last fall.
Dick was a hard worker. He was a carpenter and worked in construction his entire life. He enjoyed working with his hands and helping to repair and update all of his childrens homes at one time or another over the years. He worked many jobs, sometimes two at a time to provide for his wife and seven children. He operated his own business, Dick Vail & Sons before joining Cianbro where he retired in 1997 as General Foreman.
Dick enjoyed simple pleasures such as fishing at his son Joes camp, teaching his children and grandchildren to fish and working on puzzles. On the weekends you would find him watching the Patriots or at his grandchildrens sporting events. Dick loved the dogs he had, youd see him with Sandy and then Patches driving around town in his pickup truck. Recently youd never see him and Barbara without Max in tow. He gained much pleasure eating a lobster with butter and never turned down desserts. Most importantly, Dick was a dedicated family man and enjoyed spending time with them. There was always Christmas breakfast and summer pool parties at the home he and Barbara shared for many years in Buxton.
He was a great husband, dad and role model. He was patient, tough, funny, loyal and loving; he will be greatly missed.
Richard was predeceased by his parents; two sisters and two brothers, Ida Donald, Frances Roberts, Dayton and Charles Vail.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Barbara (Foley) Vail; seven children, Rick Vail and wife Phyllis of Auburn, Michael Vail and wife Janet of Portland, Joe Vail and wife Faith of Gorham, Tom Vail and wife Mari of Windham, Mark Vail and wife Vicki of Saco, Alicia Berglund and husband Andrew of South Portland and Teresa Folley and husband Andrew of South Portland; 17 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
