CORINTH - Joyce Marguerite Leavitt, 89, passed away July 12, 2012, at her home. Born May 25, 1923, on the Maple Road, Atkinson, to Henry F. Chase and Gertrude (Trask) Chase, Joyce was the second oldest of nine children. When not attending the local one-room schoolhouse, Joyce spent most of her childhood working on her father's farm and caring for her younger siblings. She graduated from Higgins Classical Institute, Charleston, in 1941 and married her neighbor, William Henry Leavitt, in 1942. They had two children, William Jr. and Betty Ann. During World War II, she traveled with her husband west, where they lived for a brief time in New Mexico, and finally, after the war, settled in the Los Angeles area to raise their family. Upon retiring from Firestone Tire in 1974, she moved back to Atkinson, where she was caregiver for her husband's parents, and after the death of her husband in 1989, lived in Corinth. She was a member of Atkinson Methodist Church. Aptly named by her mother, Joyce supremely loved life, cherished her family and spread joy to anyone who had the pleasure to know her. Words cannot convey how dearly she will be missed. In heaven she has finally joined her beloved husband, but will continue to live on in the precious memories of her family and friends. Joyce was predeceased by her parents; daughter, Betty Hotchgurtel; brothers, Cecil Chase and Henry Chase; and sister, Florence Libby. She is survived by her son, William Leavitt and wife, Sue; son-in-law, Joe; two grandsons, Dennis Sharp and wife, Jessica, and Tyson Leavitt; two granddaughters, Kara Pochiro and husband, Frank, and Andrea Rajner and husband, R.J.; three brothers, Robert Chase, Terry Chase and wife, Mary Lou, and Harold Chase and wife, Roxanne; two sisters, Elizabeth Stevens and husband, Lester, and Pauline Norwood; two sisters-in-law, Lucille Chase and Hilda Chase; eight great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews; and countless friends, including a special friend, Debbie Archer. Friends are invited to call 10 a.m. until time of funeral service 11 a.m. Saturday, July 14, at Lary Funeral Home, Dover-Foxcroft, with Pastor Kirk Mellen of Corinth Baptist Church, officiating. Burial will be in the family lot at Evergreen Cemetery, Milo. Those who wish may make memorial contributions to New Hope Hospice, 1344 Main Road, Eddington, ME 04428; or Corinth Baptist Church, 331 Main St., Corinth, ME 04427.
