MILLINOCKET AND OLD TOWN - Cecil R. Helstrom, 97, passed away peacefully Friday, March 16, 2012, in his sleep. Cecil was born Dec. 13, 1914, in Lagrange, the son of Edwin and Ethel Helstrom. Cecil started his journey at Schoodic and his first years of school traveled by train to West Sebois and back. His family eventually moved to Millinocket, where he graduated from Stearns High School in 1933. Shortly after high school he gathered up his brother Donald and a couple of friends and headed to California, always remembering the gravel main street of the town called Las Vegas. Cecil proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II at the Battle of the Bulge and North Africa with the Signal Corps. His most prized possession was his Army uniform. During his working years he worked for Pratt & Whitney and Colt firearms in Connecticut and construction in Maine. His recent years he resided at The Meadows, Old Town, under the special and loving care of a great bunch of ladies, who deserve a big thank you. Cecil is survived by his sister-in-law, Grace Helstrom of Millinocket; a nephew, Donald Helstrom Jr. and his wife, Gail, of Woodville; and great-nieces and great-nephew, Laura, Ursula, Mary Beth and Derek. In addition to his parents, Cecil was predeceased by his brother, Donald Helstrom; and his nephew, Kenneth Helstrom. Graveside services with military honors will be held in the springtime at Millinocket Cemetery. Arrangements are by Lamson Funeral Home, Millinocket.
