BOWERBANK - Gary Dean Wakeland, 72, died unexpectedly Aug. 13, 2011, at his home on Sebec Lake. Gary was born April 5, 1939, in Rochester, Ind., son of Wilson Mearl and Margaret (Nicoll) Wakeland. Gary met the love of his life, Margaret "Peggy" Shepardson, while he was stationed at Dow Air Force Base, Bangor, and they were married June 17, 1961. They had just recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. Gary spent the next 25 years serving his country with pride, retiring in 1983 as a U.S. Air Force captain. At that time, he relocated his family back to their summer home on Sebec Lake. Gary began a teaching career at Foxcroft Academy, where he taught and coached many successful wrestling and track teams for the next 16 years, retiring again in 1999. During tax season he worked for H&R Block. Since then he has enjoyed his time golfing with his wife in Maine during the summer and spending winters in Naples, Fla. Gary was also a member of Bowerbank Volunteer Fire Department, as well as serving as selectman and tax assessor. Gary will be remembered for all of the time that he gave to his family, from coaching his children along in their sports events to cheering his grandchildren on at their sporting events. He hated to miss an event and when he did he always called to see how they did. He loved his summer work of mowing the greens at Foxcroft Golf Club and golfing at many events. He will be greatly missed by his family and many friends. Along with his wife, Gary is survived by four children whom he treasured greatly: Teri Wakeland Mace and her husband, Robert, of Prospect, Timothy Wakeland and his wife, Allison, of Dedham, Tami Wakeland Flanders and her husband, Paul, of Dover-Foxcroft, and Theodore Wakeland and his wife, Kathy, of Cottondale, Fla. Gary was also blessed with seven grandchildren, Jessica Labree, Rebekah Flanders, Seith Wakeland, Alissa Mudd, Chelsea Flanders, Linley Wakeland and Connor Wakeland; as well as one great-grandchild, Hannah Doucette. He is also survived by four siblings, Doris Wakeland Swank of Plymouth, Ind., Robert Wakeland and his wife, Karen, of Columbia City, Ind., Judy Wakeland Smith of Plymouth, Ind., and Jay Wakeland and his wife, Pam, of Plymouth, Ind.; along with many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, a newborn sister; and one grandchild, Andrew Wakeland. Hours of visitation are 5-8 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 16, at Lary Funeral Home, Dover-Foxcroft. A memorial service celebrating Gary's life will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 17, at Dover-Foxcroft United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dodie Sheffield officiating. A reception will be immediately afterward at Foxcroft Golf Club. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Bowerbank Volunteer Fire Department, care of Eunice Preble, 720 Bowerbank Road, Bowerbank, ME 04426 or Dover-Foxcroft United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 62, Dover-Foxcroft, ME 04426. Messages of condolence and memories may be expressed at www.laryfuneralhome.com.
