Frederick E. Hutchinson

LAMOINE - Frederick Edward Hutchinson, 79, died April 7, 2010, at a Bangor hospital. He was born June 1, 1930, on the family farm in Atkinson, son of Malcolm and Gertrude (Sargent) Hutchinson. Fred attended a one-room schoolhouse in Atkinson and graduated from Foxcroft Academy in 1948. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army. After his military service, he entered the University of Maine, Orono, in 1949, with a $200 scholarship from Sears & Roebuck. He graduated from UMaine in 1953 and received a master's degree in agronomy in 1957 and in 1966, his doctorate from Penn State. Fred was a member of the UMaine faculty from 1957-1972, and from 1972-1975, he was dean of agriculture. He was vice president of research and public service at UMaine from 1975-1982. From 1982-1985, he served in the U.S. State Department and from 1985-1992, he was the provost and senior vice president at Ohio State. He returned to UMaine as its president in 1992 and retired from that position in 1997. Fred was also a member and served on numerous boards and organizations. Surviving are his wife, Dione (Williams) Hutchinson, of Lamoine; two daughters, Juliana (Hutchinson) Graham of Bar Harbor, and Karen (Hutchinson) Prest and her husband, Albert, of Boston; four grandchildren, Benjamin Shaw and his wife, Sasha, Bryan Alexander Shaw, Brittney Prest, and Jacob Prest; one brother, Donald Hutchinson and his wife, Linda, of Texas; several nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held 1 p.m. Tuesday, April 13, at All Souls Congregational Church, 10 Broadway, Bangor, with the Rev. Dr. James L. Haddix, pastor and teacher, officiating.
