FRANKFORT / ATKINSON -
Kenneth Eugene Lyford Sr., 85, passed away peacefully Aug. 18, 2009, at a Bangor nursing home. Kenneth was born Dec. 11, 1923, in Atkinson, to the late Percy J. Lyford Sr. and Elba M. (Miles) Lyford.

Kenneth's greatest passions were working hard and family. He worked for Grenci and Ellis hauling granite out of state, as a woodcutter and for E.C. Boynton Construction. He was road commissioner for the town of Frankfort for many years and during the summer, along with his wife, worked for Allen's Blueberries as a foreman, overseeing the blueberry rakers.

As many knew he loved to talk and was referred to by many as "Gabby" and by his grandchildren as the bubblegum man. He was always up for going out to eat with his wife, going for rides to the Prospect store and of course, a good joke.

Kenneth is survived by four daughters, Sandra Anderson and husband, Earl, Susanne Colson and husband, Sonny, Cynthia Ellis and husband, Jim, and Audrey Grindle and husband, Gregg, all of Frankfort; two sons, Kenneth Jr. and his wife, Kathy, and Douglas and wife, Flo, all of Frankfort; sister-in-law, Joann Bridges and husband, Vaughn, of Verona; brother-in-law, Rodney Webster and wife, Nancy, of Prospect; sisters-in-law, Elnora Lyford of Lagrange and Glendora Webster of Prospect; 21 grandchildren, Wendy, Earl Jr., Melissa, Jeff, Angela, Heidi, Chuck, Kevin, Lisa, Christina, Adrian, Gene, Sarah, Jenny, Kenny, Jessie, Lois, Greggy, Douglas Jr., Danny and Valarie; 38 great-grandchildren, several nieces, nephews and friends, too numerous to mention. Ken was predeceased by his loving wife of 41 years, Edna L. (Webster) Lyford; one son, Freeman Lyford; three grandchildren, Randy Colson, Michael Anderson and James Ellis Jr.; one great-grandchild, Brittany Robinson; five brothers and three sisters.

Kenneth's family thanks the staff of Westgate Manor and Orono Commons for their care and compassion during his stay there.

Family and friends may visit 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 21, at Hampden-Gilpatrick Funeral Home, 45 Western Ave., Hampden. A funeral service will be held 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 22, at Frankfort Congregational Church, Frankfort, with Pastor Tim Hall officiating. Memorial contributions in Ken's memory may be made to Frankfort Congregational Church, P.O. Box 38, Frankfort, ME 04438.
