MILLINOCKET - Calvin C. Cole, 83, went to heaven Friday, March 6, 2009. Calvin, known affectionately as "Coley," was born Oct. 23, 1925, in Derby, the son of Cleon and Mary (Shaw) Cole. After attending schools in Prospect and Milo, he began working for the B & A. Railroad and retired after 34 years as a conductor. At 27 years old, he was the youngest employee to qualify for that position at that time. He spoke fondly and often of his railroad memories and of the great friends he made while working there. He was a hard working man who was proud of his job and never complained when working long, consecutive stretches, which he often did. Calvin served as legislative representative for the trainmen and on the board of directors for BARCO Federal Credit Union. He was also a moving force behind starting the annual dinner for retirees. Calvin and his wife enjoyed 15 winters in New Smyrna Beach, Fla., where he spent his days walking the beach, riding his bike, playing cards with friends and beating everyone who challenged him to a game of horseshoes. He was a self-taught carpenter who loved puttering around in his garage while singing the songs that he learned throughout his childhood years. One of his hobbies was buying scratch tickets daily and hoping he'd hit the big jackpot. He enjoyed doing yard work and took pride in maintaining his home. When he wasn't doing physical chores, he could be found reading or watching a good western or watching the news. Later in life, Calvin looked forward to watching major league baseball games and was one of the few people who cheered for both the Red Sox and the Yankees. Friends and family will miss his patience, kind heart, boyish grin, quick wit, and his funny stories along with his flair for telling jokes and reciting poetry. Calvin is survived by his wife of 62 years, Dolly (Villani) Cole, who as he often said, he loved from the first moment he saw her. He is also survived by his two children, Jeff Cole and Rose Davis and her husband, John, all of Millinocket; his three grandchildren, Brent Cole, Julie Cole and Karen Davis; brothers, Robert and Bernard Dineen of Ware, Mass.; sisters, Edith McDonough of Winslow, Shirley Cole of Dover Foxcroft, and Margarette Grzywacz of Ware, Mass.; several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his brothers, Cleon and Philip Cole; and sisters, Althea Goodwin, Kathleen Milton Marco and Arlene Brown. At Calvin's request, there will be no funeral or visitation services. He never wanted anyone to be sad when he passed, so please think of him with happy memories. Gifts in memory of Calvin may be sent to Katahdin Area Support Group, 10 Field St., Millinocket, ME 04462. Arrangements are by Lamson Funeral Home, Millinocket. Messages of condolence may be expressed at www.lamsonfh.com.
