Roland C. Smith

ATKINSON - Roland C. Smith, 92, husband of Irene (Torrey) Sawyer Smith, died July 2, 2008, at a Dover-Foxcroft hospital. He was born June 21, 1916, in Orneville, the son of Jedidiah W. and Ethel M. (Carle) Smith. Roland owned and operated Atkinson Sport Shop from 1941 to 1982. He was an avid outdoorsman and especially enjoyed hunting, fishing, snow-mobiling and four-wheeling. He was predeceased by his parents; a sister, Eileen Dean and her husband, Leo; and two brothers, Stanley Smith and Merrill Smith. He is survived by his wife of 34 years, who was the love of his life, Irene of Atkinson; a brother, Liston W. Smith and wife, Marjorie, of Dover-Foxcroft; two sisters-in-law, Phyllis Smith of Atkinson and Mary Smith of Brooksville, Fla.; two stepchildren, Edward Sawyer and wife, Carol Jean, of Milo, and Nancy Smith and husband, Donald, of Millinocket; several nieces, nephews, stepgrandchildren and one great-stepgrandchild. A memorial service will be conducted 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 8, at Lary Funeral Home, Dover-Foxcroft, with the Rev. Rudy Homchuck officiating. Friends and family are invited to share fellowship after the service at United Baptist Church, Milo. Burial will be in the family lot at Evergreen Cemetery, Milo.
