GUILDFORD - Viola Severance Mithee, 83, passed away Feb. 23, 2008, at a Dover-Foxcroft nursing home after a long illness. Viola was born Jan. 19, 1925, in Milo, the eldest child of Lyman and Dorothy Foss Severance. While working at Packard's camps she met her future husband, Erwin Mithee. Married in 1946, they had two children, Thomas, born in 1947 and Dorothy in 1948. In early 1947, after Erwin sustained serious injuries working in the woods, the couple moved in with his parents, Tom and Faye Mithee. For several summers the family lived in Baxter State Park, where Erwin maintained the roads. She wrote a book about their adventures, entitled "Living at Mt. Kathahdin." After Erwin's father passed away they moved back to North Guil-ford year round. She worked in flower shops throughout the area and taught flower-arranging classes at adult education in Guilford. Viola belonged to Carpo Club, Susie Carr Chapter Order of Eastern Star, Dawn of Hope Grange, American Legion Auxiliary, Par-ents Association of the PCHS Band and was a Girl Scout leader. In the late 1950s Erwin, Viola, Tommy, Dotty and Viola's parents went to Alaska to visit her brother in Anchorage, and later trips to Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, Florida and White Mountains. After Erwin passed away, Viola sold the house in North Guilford and moved to River Bend Apartments, Guilford, happily spending her later years there. Everyone was always welcome at her home and it was full of fun and laughter. She was predeceased by her husband, to whom she was married more than 50 years, her parents, her mother-in-law and father-in-law; her brother, Carl; her sister-in-law, Marlene Severance; her son-in-law, Tom Jones; and her stepgrandson, Thomas Jones Jr. She is survived by her brothers, Minard of Milo and Wilbur and his wife, Cathy, of Spooner, Wis.; her sister, Priscilla of Dennisport, Mass.; her son, Tom and his wife, Shelley, of KnobNoster, Mo.; her daughter, Dot of Hallowell; her granddaughter, Becky of KnobNoster, Mo.; and her grandson, Tim of Glendale Heights, Ill.; several nieces and nephews.
