Elizabeth Noreen Vickers Mongovan

STAMFORD, CT - Elizabeth Noreen Vickers Mongovan passed away peacefully Wednesday, May 17, 2006. She was born Nov. 23, 1916, in Brownville Junction, the second daughter and ninth child of Florance A. Vickers and Margaret E. (Bagot) Vickers. She was educated in Brownville Junction schools and the Eastern Maine Medical Center School of Nursing. She was awarded a State of Maine gold medal in public speaking while at Brownville Junction High School. She began her career as a lab technician and chief nurse for her brother, Dr. Martyn A. Vickers Sr. of Bangor. In 1940, she married William D. Mongovan II of Bangor and had one son, William D. Mongovan III of Stamford, Conn. With her love for children, she began teaching and started with the primary grades. Family moves took her to Philadelphia, Pa. Pittsburgh, Pa. and later Greenwich, Conn. While in Greenwich, Conn., she established the first preschool program at Greenwich Catholic Middle School after teaching second grade at St. Catherine's School in Riverside for many years. She also was a teacher of CCD for St. Agnes Parish in Greenwich, Conn., where she and her husband were founding members and St. Thomas More Parish in Darien, Conn. She spent her summers in Miramichi, N.B., Canada, the birthplace of her father, where she found her passion fishing the famous Miramichi River. In a small community named Howard, N.B., she taught religion classes and raised money for many community causes including establishing a scholarship fund to motivate and support children from the area to pursue a post secondary education. In later years, she enjoyed sitting by the banks of the river sketching. She is survived by her son, William D. Mongovan III of Stamford, Conn.; and many beloved nieces, nephews and cousins spread throughout Maine, Massachusetts, New Jersey and New Brunswick, Canada. The family will receive friends 4-8 p.m. Sunday, May 21, at the Leo P. Gallagher Funeral Home, 2900 Summer St., Stamford, Conn. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10 a.m. Monday, May 22, at St. Agnes Roman Catholic Church, 247 Stanwich Rd., Cos Cob, Conn. Interment will be in the family plot at Pine Tree Cemetery, Brownville Junction. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to the Greenwich Catholic School, 471 North St., Greenwich, CT 06830. A memorial Mass will be held in June at Saints Francis Xavier and Paul the Apostle Catholic Church in Milo, at a time and date to be announced by Foley Funeral Service, Bangor.
