Arno H. Shepardson

BANGOR - Arno H. Shepardson, 78, died July 7, 2003, at a Bangor Hospital. He was born July 15, 1924, in Newport, the son of Bernard and Aurilla (Haskell) Shepardson. Mr. Shepardson had a keen mind for mathematics and graduated from the University of Maine with a degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1949. He worked for 15 years as a mechanical engineer for the Bangor and Aroostook Railroad at the Derby Shops and was a member of the Institute of Mechanical Engineers. Mr. Shepardson served with the Eighth Armored Division in Europe during World War II. He fought in the battles of Ardennes, Rhineland and Central Europe, for which he was highly decorated. He was an avid outdoorsman with a love for hunting and fishing in the northern woods and lakes of Maine, where he grew up and spent many contented years. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Ruth; three children, Julie Brownie of Stetson, Roger Shepardson of Wellesley Island, N.Y., and Sally Shepardson Leonard of Freeland, Mich.; two grand-daughters, Suzy Shepardson of Staten Island, N.Y., and Lynne Anderson of Oneonta, N.Y.; and one great-granddaughter, Jade Anderson. A graveside service with military honors will be held 11 a.m., July 12, 2003, at the North Newport Cemetery with the Rev. Dr. Randall C. Chretien, pastor of the First United Methodist Church of Bangor, officiating. Gifts in his memory may be sent to the First United Methodist Church, 703 Essex Street, Bangor, ME 04401.
