Megan Russell reaches 1,000 points as the Lady Pats shut down Central

MILO When Kerri Russell scored her one thousandth point as a Lady Patriot five years ago, her sister, Megan, then 12, knew she would one day reach the same milestone. Megan Russell reached that milestone Jan. 9.

Her sister, Kerri, now 23 and a student at Husson College, reached the 1,000-point mark in 1997.

Megan Russell lacked just six points to reach her milestone going into the game with Central last Wednesday night. With 1:31 remaining in the first quarter, she connected with the net for the third time. And, the third was the charm. A thee-point shot, giving her a total of 1,001 career oints, and stopping the clock for a few minutes for presentations.

"The best part was following my sister's footsteps. That's kind of a brick off my shoulders," she siad. "It's kind of deja vu. Only we switched positions. I remember the feeling when she scored her 1,000 points. I was hoping I would feel the same way one day."

What's also deja fu is that both sisters scored their 1,000th point with a three-point shot.

"It's awesome, just because Kerri had scored 1,000 points," she said. "The crows was awesome."

She said she has applied to the University of Maine Orono, and the Farmington UMaine campus. When asked if she plans to play basketball in college, she responded, "I don't know if I want to play or not. I want to concentrate on school right now."

Wally Russell, the father of Megan and Kerri, is the head coach of the Lady Patriots. the 1973 Penquis Valley High School graduate was named to the first team "All State" in his senior year. He has been at the helm of the girls basketball program since 1994.

"Both of them showed that hard work pays off. Megan has put a lot of time in during the summer time year round actually," Wally Russell said.

Penquis led throughout the game defeating the Lady Devils 63-48.

Russell led Penquis with a total of 23 points. She was followed by April Allen with 12. Central was led by Katy Ahern with 16 points and Jenny Rollins with 13.
