AUGUSTA Four Maine college students will study in Ireland next year as the 2002 George J. Mitchell Peace Scholars. The students, who were selected for their academic and leadership abilities and their commitment to community service, will be honored at a luncheon ceremony at the Portland Regency on June 3.

The 2002 George J. Mitchell Peace Scholars include: Catie Joyce of Milo, an English and journalism student at the University of Maine. Joyce and a classmate will go abroad to Ireland next spring. The students will study at University College Cork or Cork Institute of Technology.

The George J. Mitchell Peace Scholarship was created in 1998 as a tribute to Senator Mitchell for his work in helping to facilitate a peace accord for Ireland and Northern Ireland, and his lifelong devotion and commitment to public service.

At the luncheon ceremony, the students will receive a framed certificate naming them George J.Mitchell Peace Scholars, and a $1,000 travel stipend. The student's tuition, academic fees and room and board will all be waived by the Irish institutions.
