PVC names 2002 All-stars

The Penobscot Valley Conference announced its 2002 All-Star teams, and a number of local athletes were recognized.

Josh Withee of Foxcroft Academy was named a first team outfielder for the Class B baseball squad, while teammate Seth Gabarro was named as a second team first baseman. Danny White and Brendan Croan represent the Ponies on the honorable mention list.

On the Class C/D side, teammates Ben Smith (designated hitter) and Buddy Bates (utility player) of the PCHS Pirates from Guilford were named first team all-stars, Adam Russell and Ross Morrison, both of Dexter, were elected to the second team, as was Mike Grindle of Penquis. Steve Kissell of Penquis and Bryan White of PCHS were selected as honorable mention.

In softball, Foxcroft Academy had four players gamer postseason honors. Mandi Murray was selected as a first team outfielder for the PVC Class B All-star team, and pitcher Crystal Boudreau was named to thesecond team. Leigh Cartwright and Darcy McCormick were named as honorable mention.

Pitcher Karen Nelson and Kristy Veazie from the Dexter Tigers were selected to the first team PVC Class C/D All-stars, as were Catherine Riitano (DH) of PCHS and Megan Russell (utility player) of Penquis.Cindy Koscielny, of Dexter, Pam Bailey, an outfielder from PCHS, and Mindy Dyer (utility player) of Penquis were all named as second team PVC All-stars.

Stephanie Wentworth (PCHS), Arielle Sickler (Penquis), and Brittany Veazie (Dexter) were all chosen as honorable mention.

Manuel Blanc of Foxcroft was named to the second team PVC Class A/B tennis squad as a singles player. Mike Fyrberg from Dexter was named to a first team singles all star spot for PVC Class C/D. He was also named conference player of the year, sharing that award with Andy Severance from Sumner. Fyrberg's teammates Matt Capobianco and Jeremy Kenney were named to the first team for their play together in the doubles bracket. Mike Burton, also of Dexter, was named honorable mention.

On the girl's tennis side, Lindsay Hamlin of Penquis made the first team singles squad for Class C, while teammates April Allen and Kim Zimmerman were selected as honorable mention. Sarah Turner from Dexter garnered a honorable mention spot as well.
