SWOAM tour set for September 22

Article from The Eastern Gazette, Vol. 148, No. 34, August 24, 2002

SEBEC - Making do with what you've got on a shoe string budget and thousands hours of repetitive motion can produce a variety of satisfying results.

Fifty years of forest manipulation will be demonstrated and discussed by Nils Peterson, who grew up on this old hard scrabble farm, and current keeper Ron Locke. Bill Mahan, forestry consultant, will assist with the tour. Bill has been formally designated to assist Ron's heirs with the management of this forest.

The tour will cover land use history, ownership, silviculture, wildlife management, pond, brook and wetland management and protection, trail system, public access, inventory, planning and record keeping, stump to furniture, air drying lumber, forest products, logging techniques, insect, disease, and the vagaries of nature.

The tour will begin at 9 AM and finish up at 4 PM on Sunday, September 22, rain or shine. Bring a lunch. Drinks will be provided.

Wicopy Woods is located at 139 North Road in Sebec. Turn north at Sebec Comer (blinking light halfway between Dover-Foxcroft and Milo on Rte 6/16). Travel about 8 tenths of a mile to the North Road. Take a left onto the North Road and clock about 5 tenths of a mile. SWOAM signs will be posted.

For more information, contact Ron at 564-7600.
