Penquis upsets No. 1 PCHS 1-0

Article from The Piscataquis Observer, Vol. 164, No. 44, October 30, 2002

GUILFORD Penquis of Milo scored early and held on the rest of the game to post a 1-0 upset win over No. 1-ranked PCHS in Class C boys soccer semifinal action Tuesday afternoon.

Jordan Allen put in a pass from Steve Kissell just 8:12 into the game. That is all the Patriots would need as they kept the Pirates offense off-balance on their way to avenging two regular season losses at the hands of PCHS.

Coach Rex Webb credited his midfield for controlling the action and keeping the PCHS offense in check. He said the play of the midfielders, specifically BenWebb, Colby Chase and Nick Maioriello, as well as Garret Durant was key to the win.

The last time the two teams met, Penquis was on the losing end of a 6-2 PCHS win, a game that featured a number of fine offensive plays by the Pirates. Webb said his team avoided a repeat of that performance by challenging the ball on defense, giving the Pirates no room to make the easy pass.

"They didn't get the opportunity to set up," said Webb after the game. "They didn't get the opportunity to sit back and see the whole field."

No. 5-ranked Penquis (9-5-2) now moves on to play the winner of Tuesday's Schenck-George Stevens Academy matchup in the Class C Eastem Maine final Saturday.

PCHS finishes their season with a record of 10-1-5.
