SEBEC Residents will be asked to appoint a third selectman at a special town meeting next week.

The meeting is set for Tuesday, Jan. 7, at 7 p.m. in the Harland A. Ladd Municipal Building.

The election will fill the vacant post left by Glenn Fariel, who after fulfilling two years in a 3-year term, submitted a letter of resignation to the board Nov. 3. His term was to expire in 2003.

Fariel wrote in his letter of resignation that "due to the increased responsibilities and demands with my job, I no longer have the time that I feel is necessary to perform my duties as first selectman." He works in the information technologies department at Dexter Shoe in Dexter.

The letter came soon after Selectman Buzz Small said in a public meeting - after several residents raised concerns about Fariel's continued absences from meetings - that he would write a letter to Fariel, requesting he make clear his future intentions to the town.

While rumors have floated as to who may want the position, there has been nothing official. The town does not require candidates collect signatures nor file nomination papers: Townspeople will provide nominations from the floor at the special town meeting.
