Brownville Elementary School kicks off literacy challenge

Article from The Piscataquis Observer, Vol. 165, No. 5, January 29, 2003

BROWNVILLE Brownville Elementary School last week launched Read With Me: 2003, a two-week community reading challenge that promotes literacy activities between students and community members.

The activity is sponsored by Reading is Fundamental Inc., the nation's largest children's and family literacy organization, and the MetLife Foundation.

The challenge awards points to students for meeting their reading goals for a two-week period, based on grade level. The challenge also awards points to RIF sites that involve parents, grandparents, community members and guests.

On Tuesday, Jan. 28, students and staff at the school kicked off the event by dressing as favorite book characters. The events continue on Tuesday, Feb. 4, with Guest Readers Day, and on Friday, Feb. 7, with the distribution of books to student readers.

The school is looking for volunteers to participate in the literacy activities, throughout the two week challenge. Community members who would like more information about volunteering to read aloud, discuss their profession or support the challenge in other ways can contact reading recovery teacher Linda Lumbra at the school, 965-3737.

There will be a drawing for participating volunteers to win a pair of hockey tickets to the University of Maine game against Providence College on Feb. 15.
