High School art show held at new Art Center in Milo

A PORTRAIT OF THE ARTISTS Penquis Valley High School juniors Amanda Kahl, left, and Biliary Sproul show off their works of art that received recognition at the District #\ Federation of Women's Clubs second annual art contest held in Milo on March 31. Kahl won first place and Sproul came in second. The students' art work will compete on the state level in May. Their teacher is Mary Shapleigh.

MILO Approximately 75 people attended the 2nd Annual High School Art Contest sponsored by the Women's Club in GFWC/Maine Federation of Women's Clubs District 1, Patten Woman's Club, Patten; Pamola Woman's Club, Sherman; GFWC/Cosmopolitan and GFWC/Miosac Clubs of Dover-Foxcroft. The contest was held at the new Art Center in Milo.

Fifteen entries from Piscataquis Community High, Foxcroft Academy, Penquis Valley High, and Katahdin High were judged by Cartha Smith of Dover Foxcroft, Thorn Walter of Sebec, Peggy Lumpkins of Brownville, Dot Brown of Milo, and Stephanie Cartwright of Guilford. Co-Chairmen were Mema Dunham of Milo and Judi Walter of Sebec.

Monetary prizes were available this year due to the generosity of the Three Rivers Kiwanis, Milo; Dover-Foxcroft Kiwanis; Moosehead Manufacturing Co. and the above named Women's Clubs. First prize of $100 went to Amanda Kohl of Penquis Valley; second prize of $75 went to Hillary Sproul of Penquis Valley; third prize of $50 was won by Aaron Michaud of Katahdin High; and fourth prize of $25 was won by Nathan Moore of Katahdin High.

Winning entries will be entered in the GFWC/Maine Federated Women's Clubs Art Contest in Bar Harbor May 15-16.
