SEBEC Residents will be asked at a special town meeting Wednesday to raise money to pay a past due landfill bill.

Selectman Susan Dow said Tuesday that the meeting was scheduled to address the town's past due bill to take care of solid waste, recycling and demolition debris costs, The town participates in the Dover landfill where costs have increased about 5 percent in the previous year, she said.

"We misjudged when we budgeted landfill costs," Dow explained. "I think we'll have a better handle on it this year." The town budgeted around $25,000 in the current fiscal year to cover the landfill costs a figure that had included money to cover a j past due bill the previous year, Dow said. The $5,000 raised at the special town meeting Wednesday should ensure bills are paid through August's regular town meeting.

Also at the Wednesday meeting, residents will consider two additional articles. Dow said that the Sebec Volunteer Firelighters Association is requesting that the town co-sign on a loan to purchase a new fire truck.

The department, which serves Sebec, Bowerbank and Barnard Plantation, currently has three trucks, between 20 and 30 years old. Fire Chief Robert Slama said at a selectmen's meeting in February that the department would like to buy a used truck that is 10 years old or less.

Dow said that the current estimate on a fire truck is between $83,000 and $100,000. Residents will be asked Wednesday to co-sign on a $90,000 loan, she said. Any difference could be made up by the fire department.

The third item on the agenda asks voters to appropriate $2,500 to cover general government expenses. Dow said the money would go to buy a new photocopier and, possibly, a new computer for the town office.

The meeting starts at 7 p.m. in the Harland Ladd Municipal Building.
