GO FOR THE THROW Penquis shortstop Erika Morrill throws to first to catch a PCHS runner during the first game of a doubleheader held Friday in Guilford. Penquis swept the Pirates 10-1 and 16-9.

GUILFORD Penquis pulled away with a six-run second inning when backed up Dani Graves with steady defense as the sophomore hurler one-hit PCHS for a 10-1 win in the first game of a doubleheader here Friday afternoon.

Ahead 1-0 heading into the bottom of the second, the Patriot lineup put the bat solidly on the ball and took advantage of some Pirate miscues to build a big inning.

With two runners on base and one out, third baseman Amanda Martin singled quickly up the middle, scoring both Lindsay Ouellette and Ashley Pelletier. Erika Morrill followed that with an RBI single of her own to bring the tally to 4-0.

Next up to the plate was first baseman Arielle Sickler, whose hard shot down the third base line was knocked down by Pirate Chelsi Martell but not in time to stop Morrill from scoring the fifth Penquis run. Sickler and Michelle Mulherin would cap the inning with two more runs as they reached home plate on a couple of wild pitches.

Meanwhile, Graves was doing her part to keep the Pirates off the board with a solid fastball and occasional change-up. With only four strikeouts over her seven innings of work, Graves more often depended on the defense behind her to finish what she started, and the gloves in the field were more often up to the task.

In the top of the second inning, PCHS tried to regain the run it had lost in the bottom of the fast, getting shortstop Tedianne Galuski to third base to start the inning. But solid plays by Morrill and Michelle Mulherin ended the threat.

That theme continued with some variation throughout the game. In the third, Miranda Dyer made a tough, backhanded stab in center to rob an extra-base hit and end the inning. PCHS got a lead-off runner on in the fourth inning, but Mulherin ended that with a good throw to second on an attempted stolen base.

The Pirates did finally get on the board in the sixth inning when Kristilyn Levesque scored on a fielder's choice by Karoleanne Emery.

"We played really good 'D' " Graves said after the game. "Our defense always backs me up. We hit pretty well too."

Pelletier finished with a single, double, and an RBI. Morrill had a triple, double, two runs and an RBI.

Mulherin contributed two singles, a walk, and a run.

Galuski had the only Pirate hit, a double in the second inning.

In the second game, Penquis took a 16-9 victory.

Graves led the Patriots with a double, three singles, and four RBIs.

Mulherin had three hits, including a triple, and Jean Hamlin had a two-run double.

Pam Bailey led Pirates with two doubles and an RBI. Heather Woodbury added two hits, including triple, and Galuski contributed a triple as well.
