MILO A plan to move the sixth grade classrooms back to the elementary schools in SAD 41 is being put off for another year.

According to SAD 41 Superintendent David Walker, board members agreed to allow the sixth-grade junction at Penquis Valley High School remain for another year. The 2003-04 budget proposal had included a plan to move the grades to the Brownville and Milo elementary schools.

The savings of $60,654 amounts to the cost of an additional half-time principal and secretary for the junction.

The plan incorporated two classrooms in Milo and one in Brownville. If it went into effect next fall, the sixth grade in Milo would have held 27 students in each class. "That's a lot of kids under any circumstance," Walker said, "so we backed away."

Walker said that the following sixth-grade population is smaller, allowing for a smoother transition back to the elementary schools in 2004-05.

The superintendent said that a lower-than-anticipated health insurance increase in rates will allow the sixth grade to remain in the high school. Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield's rates jumped 9.8 percent, rather than the projected 15 percent increase, he said.

Walker did not have the exact savings in insurance costs, but noted that retaining the sixth grade at the high school would be "a wash."

The $6.45 million package represents a $15,000 (about 0.2 percent) increase over the 2002-03 budget. A public hearing on the budget is scheduled for 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 28, at Brownville Elementary School. Residents in the district, which represents Milo, Brownville, Lagrange and Atkinson, will vote on the budget 7 p.m. June 18 at the gymnasium at Penquis Valley High School in Milo.
