Retired educators meet at Covered Bridge

GUILFORD Fourteen members of the Piscataquis County Retired Educators Association met at the Covered Bridge Restaurant for a luncheon meeting. President Phil Gerow opened the meeting and led The Collect, Pledge of Allegiance and singing of God Bless America.

The secretary's report was read and accepted. The treasurer reported a small increase in the treasury. John Glover stated that he had notified Penquis Valley administrators that the Ethel Pennington Scholarship would be awarded to a Milo student this year. Correspondence read was a thank you from Minnie for the plant she received from the group.

Phil reported on convention and the Reading Program. Governor Baldacci spoke at the spring convention. He assured us that the 5 percent increase in insurance would pass, but it may not happen due to his new Health Plan. We were encouraged to contact our Legislative members regarding this issue.

Phil read a tribute to mothers and a poem regarding memorial and freedom, written by Ronald Hamilton, a former Milo High Student.

Kathy Richards spoke about the program "Protecting God's Children" to be presented at the next meeting.

Rose Carlson, who has just returned from Florida, spoke about her granddaughter attending UMO. Gil Reynolds spoke about what he is doing now and is weighing benefits of future work or retirement.

Phil read "The Sneeze" regarding prayer at graduation ceremonies. Members were given a copy.

The next meeting will be June 24 at noon at the Covered Bridge Restaurant. The meeting was adjourned.
