FAMILY DOLLAR - Employees at the new Family Dollar Store in Milo are, from left, manager Albert Dowling, Whittney Web, Candy Brown, Tanya Neal and Debbie Barley.

MILO Family Dollar, the North Carolina-based discount store chain that has grown to more than 4,700 stores nationwide since 1959, has come to the neighborhood.

The store in Milo, adjacent the Milo Farmers Union on Park Street, opened May 20 becoming store number 24 in the state. According to Albert Dowling, manager of the new store, the company chose Milo as a location because of its ability to service surrounding towns, such as LaGrange, Lake View Plantation,
Brownville and Omeville, without disrupting sales at its Dover-Foxcroft and Dexter stores.

Dowling formerly managed the Family Dollar store in Lincoln.

The grand opening celebration was May 22, complete with a live radio broadcast with Q106.5, Dowling said. A quieter opening was held May 20, a week after the store employees first started installing shelving and stocking the 5,800-square-feet of retail space, from floor to ceiling.

The store sells grocery items, clothing, shoes, cleaning supplies, automotive and household goods, with a focus on customer service.

Half a dozen full and part-time employees have been hired to staff the store, Dowling said.

He said there are a dozen more Family Dollar stores opening in Maine this year, including one in Portland and Bucksport. The chain aims to open 500 new stores a year, with 525 new stores opened in 2002 and 502 in 2001, according to its Web site (www.familydollar.com). Family Dollar Stores, Inc. operates stores in 42 states ranging as far northwest as North Dakota, northeast to Maine, southeast to Florida, and southwest to Arizona.

The Milo site is leased from Fred Trask of Lake View Plantation.
