Retired educators hold regular meeting

Article from The Piscataquis Observer, Vol. 165, No. 29, July 16, 2003

Piscataquis County Retired Educators met at the Covered Bridge for a luncheon meeting with 9 members and 1 guest present. President Phil Gerow welcomed all and led the Collect, Pledge of Allegiance and singing of God Bless America. He introduced Kathryn Childs, facilitator for Protecting God's Children, who later spoke about the program.

The secretary's report was read and accepted. In the absence of the treasurer, Phil reported that he presented the Ethel Pennington Scholarship to Jason Dean of Piscataquis Valley High of Milo at graduation. Dean will be going into education.

Gerow also reported that we will be getting a 5 percent increase in insurance, but the cost of insurance will rise 4.1 percent.

A discussion of how to increase attendance and program suggestions was held. It was suggested that we might have better attendance in the winter. That issue will be discussed further at the next meeting.

Members signed cards to be sent to ill members, Audrey Thomton, Virginia Bradford and Hazel Weymouth. A "Thinking of You" card will be sent to Joyce Bridge, a former member who moved away.

Kathryn Childs spoke about "Protecting God's Children," a program started in 1997 by Reverend McCoy. The purpose of the program is keeping perpetrators out of organizations. She explained how they endear themselves to children, organizations and communities. She showed a video of children who had been abused. Phase two of the programs shows how to know the warning signs. She is willing to show the video to other groups and organizations.

Gerow mentioned that plans are being made for the Christmas Party on December 8. The next meeting will be July 22 with Suzanne Raymond speaking about her trip to Australia. The meeting was adjourned.
