Former K&L Auto Shop under new ownership

MILO It all started with a child's passion for building model cars.

At age 16, Louie Turavani got to work on his first real car, a Plymouth Station wagon. A brake job, he said.

At 18 he turned up at a garage in Chelsea, Mass., to ask the owner if he could help out, for free, so he could be around real mechanics.

"I took the garbage out," Turavani said, "and was seeing first-hand how it's all done."

A week later, the owner gave him his first job &Mac247; as a mechanic.

"I was a quick learner," he said.

Two weeks ago, Turavani, now of Milo, and his brother-in-law, Eric Veno of Massachusetts, bought the K&LAuto Shop in Derby from Kirk Beard. They are now operating Derby Auto Repair out of the same location, a three-bay garage at 4 Second St. Turavani's wife and Veno's sister, Marie Turavani. is the official bookkeeper.

Turavani, who performs all the mechanics, offers the full gamut of auto maintenance and repair, from standard oil changes to the more complex engine rebuilds.

For Turavani, the new business gives him the opportunity of a lifetime.

"I've been a mechanic since age 10, and I'm 43 now," he said. "I always wanted to open my own business to help people out, be fair and be honest, and try to compromise . "

He said he purposefully keeps his labor rate low at $26 per hour to be fair to hard-working, poorer families.

He said it is important to him that customers leave his shop happy, and with a sense of fairness.

Although business so far has been slow, Turavani is determined to make the shop a success. He has several ideas to better the business and help the community such as shuttle service for seniors and a donation of $1 per oil change to a local charity.

But it is his knowledge of mechanics and his commitment to the business that, in the end, will make all the difference.

"I want to make [my customers] feel like my family," he said.
