Sebec resident proud of volunteer firefighters

Article from The Piscataquis Observer, Vol. 166, No. 47, November 24, 2004
To the editor:

I read with pride the article in the Observer about the Sebec and Guilford Fire Departments receiving the Homeland Security Grants. I am proud of the continued efforts of a dedicated group of volunteers that put others first with hard work and time to improve the Sebec Volunteer Fire Department with minimal tax increases to the residents that they serve and protect.

Those that haven't had the opportunity to be involved with the inner complexities of meeting the ever-changing government regulations and safety requirements may find it hard to understand the amount of money necessary to meet these needs. Sebec is, and should be proud of this group of firemen who have made strides the past three years. They have increased the number of volunteers, received a grant from the Stephen King Foundation that assisted with the purchase of a replacement truck, and now the Homeland Security Grant that will help with the purchase of gear, air packs, and other necessary items. In addition to the grant applications, they have spent many hours with fund-raisers to help defer expenses.

The next time you see one of our fireman, congratulate them for their efforts.

The next time you see a fund-raiser such as a supper, pig roast, or "road toll", show your appreciation for a job well done and be there, or make a contribution equal to theirs! I know they'll be there when you need them
