Firefighting has many faces
October 08, 2009 - TRC
A fire is frightening for people of any age. Visits to the Fire Department and time with firemen allow children to see and experience the equipment and the sight of a fireman all geared up to fight a fire. The hope always is that no child must ever see a fireman appearing out of smoke and flames to rescue him or her. The reality is that at times this is exactly what occurs.
Children will sometimes perceive the fireman in full gear as a monster instead of a rescuer. If they run or hide it will make a bad situation worse - and could cost children and firemen their lives. Outings to the fire station help avoid this kind of needless tragedy.
Sure looks like trying on a fireman's helmet is a fun way to teach and learn.
