Help For Homeowners - Air Sealing Your Home For Energy Savings

September 18, 2009 - TRC - By Renae Muscatell

Penquis has received a grant from the JTG Foundation to offer qualifying homeowners an economical way to weatherize their homes. “Often when people think of weatherizing their homes they think of insulating and/or installing new widows and doors which can be quite costly,” said Mike Bush, Housing Developer for Penquis. “This program is designed to address air leaks as an economical way to save on heating and cooling costs.” According to Bush, air leaks can account for 5-40% of heating and cooling costs.

The “Do It Yourself” Air Sealing Program administered by Penquis helps homeowners save money on fuel and energy costs. The program offers an educational workshop, a free home energy audit, an individualized program for a homeowner to address the air leaks unique to their problem areas, up to $200 reimbursement for air sealing materials, and a follow-up home energy audit to evaluate the effectiveness of the steps taken to stop the air leaks.

“Reducing your home heating and cooling bills often begins with conducting a home energy audit to assess where your home may be losing heat through air leaks,” said Susan Kischitz, Energy Auditor for Penquis. “The audit will show problems that, when corrected, may save you significant amounts of money over time.” The home energy audit will include a blower door test and homeowners will be given specific air sealing tasks for their homes. Reimbursement will be given for materials such as spray foam, door sweeps, caulk, weather-stripping and more.

The program is for motivated homeowners who are able to do the work themselves or have the resources or support to get the work completed. The qualifying income range for Penobscot County residents is $38,160—$57,240 and for Piscataquis County residents $36,160—$54,240.

The workshops will be held from 6:00 pm -7:30 pm; Wednesday, September 23, at Penquis, 50 North St., Dover Foxcroft; Wednesday, September 16, at the Town Council Chambers, 23 Maine Street, Dexter; Wednesday, September 23, at Ballard Hill Community Center, 75 Main St., Lincoln; and Thursday, September 24, at Penquis, 262 Harlow St., Bangor.
