100 Mile Wilderness Sled Dog Race for 2008December 01, 2007 - TRCBy Terry Knowles and Margie Williams The 3rd annual Greenville to Brownville 100 mile race will be a challenge for musher and dogs alike. Contestants in the 100-mile race will begin on Moosehead Lake at 9 AM on Saturday, February 9, 2008. The 100-mile race mushers will travel through the “The 100 mile wilderness” on an “out and back” trail. At the turnaround on Railroad Avenue in Brownville Junction, mushers will rest themselves and their dogs for a minimum of two hours. The race, this year, is limited to 25 teams. Some of the viewing points will be at the Starting point, intersection of Buck Lane and Lily Bay Road in Greenville on the county road at Katahdin Iron Works, Front Street in Brownville and at the two hour layover site on Railroad Avenue in Brownville. The race is a collaborative effort of the Towns of Greenville and Brownville along with the Moosehead Riders and Brownville Snowmobile Clubs and many land owners. The Piscataquis Amateur Radio Club maintains radio control points along the race course. Other events are planned for the day in both Brownville and Greenville.The towns of Brownville and Greenville are working with several local organizations and landowners – including the Appalachian Mountain Club and Plum Creek Timber Company - to promote and expand winter sports in the region. Again, this year the race organization goal is to get community members involved, both as volunteers and spectators, to have a fun, and to help run a safe race for dogs and mushers. Many businesses from all over Piscataquis County have given either money of in-kind contributions as sponsors of this race. Plum Creek Timber Company has stepped forward once again to become a major race sponsor.Behind the scenes, a group of dedicated individuals from throughout Piscataquis County have worked to make the race successful since June 2004.
