2006 PROPERTY TAX AND RENT REFUND APPLICATIONS

SENATOR DEBRA PLOWMAN ANNOUNCES AVAILABILITY OF 2006 PROPERTY TAX AND RENT REFUND APPLICATIONS

(AUGUSTA, ME) Applications for the 2006 Maine Residents Property Tax and Rent Refund Program (a.k.a. - the Circuit Breaker Program) will be available beginning August 1st State Senator Debra Plowman (R-Penobscot County) announced today. This property tax relief program is for qualified homeowners or renters of any age who live in Maine.

According to Maine Revenue Services, over 200,000 Maine households qualify for a partial refund of property tax assessed and/or rent they paid in 2005. The maximum refund available is $2,000.

Homeowners or renters who meet all of the following criteria are eligible for a refund: were Maine residents for all 12 months of 2005, owned or rented a home in Maine for all 12 months of 2005 and occupied that home for at least 6 months of 2005, and had a 2005 property tax bill that was more than 4% of total household income OR paid rent in 2005 that was more than 20% of total household income. Seniors do not need to meet the last requirement when their income is below $12,700 for those living alone or below $15,700 when living with a spouse or dependent.

Household income limits for the program are as follows: $77,000 or less for singles; $102,000 or less if you are married or have dependents.

Applications must be filed by May 31, 2007.

At the end of July, 2006, booklets will be mailed automatically to all households that filed an application (either by paper or by computer) for 2005 program benefits. Application booklets will also be mailed automatically to those who requested a program booklet on their 2005 Maine individual income tax return, unless income exceeds the limits for the program.
