Y Receives Grant to Offer Free Services to Veterans

September 29, 2011 - TRC - By Patrick Meyers

The Piscataquis Regional YMCA was recently awarded a $25,000 grant from the Tibor and Anna Doby Veteran Support Fund of the Maine Community Foundation. The grant, the first received by the Y from the Doby Fund, will be used to provide free 6-month memberships to veterans and their families who live in the community as well as helping the Y to partner with other veteran’s services organizations.

“We are thrilled to be able to provide this service to our veterans,” said Erika Weidner, the Y’s Executive Director, “We have a large community of veterans who live in our service area and we want to make sure that they are able to use the Y and that they are accessing all the services available to them. This grant will allow us to do just that.”

Tibor and Anna Doby barely escaped the Hungarian Revolution of 1956. Through the trials they endured before being granted political asylum in the U.S., they came to know firsthand the devastating effects of war. Over time the Dobys developed an interest in the American soldiers who served in Vietnam, Iraq, and Afghanistan. Through their estate, they have provided support to Maine veterans and their families. The grant to the PR YMCA will fund free memberships for veterans and a part-time veterans services coordinator who will help veterans to get the most out of the Y and make sure that they are connected with other area service providers. “We want to make sure that the veterans using the Y are also taking advantage of all the services available to them.” Weidner said, “We’ll be organizing speakers from other groups and programs and talking to other organizations to ensure that these veterans get all the help they need.” Veterans from all branches of the military will be eligible to take part in the program which will officially start October 1st. Anyone interested in taking part in the program should call the Y at 564-7111 or stop by the Y at 48 Park Street in Dover-Foxcroft. The Piscataquis Regional YMCA is a cause-driven organization that is committed to the community and dedicated to promoting healthy spirit, mind, and body for all, through programs and services grounded in Christian Heritage and the core values of Caring, Honesty, Respect, and Responsibility.
