Third Annual Schoodic Lake Ice Out Contest Winner Announced

April 14, 2006 - TRC

The usual breaking up of the ice and it floating down the lake in big and little pieces to herald the ice being out of Schoodic Lake didn't happen this year. Instead it seems to have sunken early, quietly, and without much fanfare on April 6.

The last batch of tickets was tallied Friday night - the tally had been delayed because the tickets had been secured at the seller's business and the final tally needed to include them. I am sorry for the delay - I know we have been behind schedule.

There were duplicate entries for the 3:00 ice out time on that day and the ticket with the earliest date of entry was written on February 20 (the other on March 29).

The winner of the Third Annual Schoodic Lake Ice Out Contest is Doug Warren, Sr. of Milo. He had listened to a weather report that indicated spring would be about two weeks ahead of usual and made his earliest guess accordingly - followed by entries for the 7th, 8th, 9th, 10th, and 11th. Doug has entered the contest every year, but almost didn't bother this year. Now he's glad he did. He plans to use his $100.00 prize to help purchase a new motor scooter. Sounds like he's getting ready for spring too.

The Three Rivers Community Alliance wishes to thank all the businesses and individuals who sold Ice Out Contest tickets and the persons who entered for their support with our contest. It can't happen without you.

Our judge has retired after years of recording the ice out for a research project, and more recently for us also. We thank you for your help with our contest and wish you many more years of retirement and every success in whatever you may choose to do.

New judge(s) / lakewatcher(s) will be needed for the contest in 2007. My home e-address may be changing soon and I don't want to miss any messages so if you are willing to assume this responsibility, please send to my work e-mail : IWarren@penquiscap.org

Thank you again for your support of the Annual Schoodic Lake Ice Out Contest.
