New Piscataquis/Somerset Home Horticulture Coordinator

April 27, 2011 - TRC - By Amanda Miles

The University of Maine Cooperative Extension has a new person to help home gardeners with their garden questions. Tom Goodspeed is the new Home Horticultural Coordinator for Somerset and Piscataquis Counties. He will be coordinating the Master Gardner Program and answering horticultural questions in Somerset and Piscataquis Counties working under Donna Coffin and Kathy Hopkins, Extension Educators in these counties.

Tom grew up in the area around Fairfield, Maine, and he and his wife have a home in Clinton. They have two sons whom are both married and they have two grandchildren. He says, "My wife and I both have taken the Master Gardeners course and love to garden, hike, camp and pretty much enjoy all things the great outdoors in Maine, has to offer."

For the past ten years he has worked as a retail nursery manager in Winslow Maine. Before that he was employed by Scott Paper Company in Winslow Maine, in many capacities. "In my younger days I have worked in the landscape business and have been around the Greenhouse, Landscape and Nursery industries most of my life." He is looking forward to the opportunity of working with Master Gardeners and home gardeners in Piscataquis County.

If you have any gardening questions please call Tom at 207-564-3301 or 1-800-287-1491 or email Thomas.goodspeed@maine.edu. You can bring in samples of insects or plant diseases for identification and management information.

If you are new to gardening and would like to chat about how to start give him a call. We are starting plans for the fall Master Gardener volunteer training; let him know if you are interested in this advanced garden volunteer program.
