February 11, 2011 - TRC - By Penquis

Bangor, ME - February 11, 2011- Penquis continues to book appointments for its Fuel Assistance (Low-income Home Energy Assistance Program, HEAP, or LiHEAP) Program at the Penquis offices in Dover-Foxcroft, Bangor, Lincoln and Rockland until April 30, 2011. LiHEAP assists income eligible households by providing a benefit to help with home heating costs.

The benefit covers homes heated with oil, kerosene, coal, wood, wood pellets, LP gas or electricity. "Over 12,011 individuals have filled out applications in our service area," said Melanie Hurlburt, Division Manager for Penquis Housing and Energy Services. "At the end of January Maine received its supplemental funding which increased the average benefit from $515 to $778." Hurlburt also noted that eligible households may also qualify for other services, such as Weatherization.

Applications are taken by appointment only. "This year applicants have the option to book their own appointment online," said Hurlburt. "It's quick and easy, and over 220 people have used this feature so far this year." Individuals can book their appointment at www.penquis.org. In addition to booking the appointment, there is also information available online about what to bring to the appointment to complete the application.

To make an appointment individuals can also call the nearest Penquis office in Bangor: 973-3630, Lincoln: 794-3093, Rockland: 596-0361 and Dover-Foxcroft: 564-7116 or 1800-215-4942.
