Letter re: AOS from MSAD # 41 Board of Directors

January 04, 2011 - TRC - By MSAD 41 School Board

Dear Citizens of MSAD #41:

On January 25, 2011 the citizens of MSAD # 41 will be asked to go to the polls to vote on a plan to join our school district in an AOS with neighboring MSAD #31. MSAD #31 consists of the towns of Howland, Passadumkeag, Enfield, Burlington, Maxfield and Edinburg. An AOS (Alternative Organizational Structure) combines only the central offices of the two districts, eliminating one superintendent position, and combining central office business functions. Our plan has been approved by a Regional Planning Committee, by the MSAD # 41 School Committee, and by the State Department of Education. The plan will go to you, the voters, for approval on January 25, 2011.

Some things you should know about the plan.

* An AOS Board would be formed consisting of current MSAD # 31 and MSAD # 41 Board members. The AOS Board would oversee only AOS Central Office functions.

* Each district would retain their current boards to oversee all other daily operations of their districts.

* Each district would keep its own debts and assets. These are not shared.

* The plan would eliminate the costly state penalties of $113,000 for MSAD #41 and $105,000 for MSAD # 31 by satisfying the school consolidation law requirement.

* The plan calls for an additional $ 75,000 in savings over the next three years.

We also see this new venture as a chance to offer additional programs for students. Perhaps we will be able to share an athletic team or a performing arts initiative that we cannot fund alone. Perhaps we will be able to share teaching staff to offer a foreign language or advanced placement class in each district. The full opportunities to share will become more apparent only by bringing the two districts together. The full plan is available at the MSAD #41 Superintendent's Office.

The MSAD # 41 Board of Directors unanimously supports this plan and encourages you to vote "yes" on January 25.

There will be an informational meeting held on Wednesday, January 12 at 7:00 pm at the Penquis Valley Middle/High School Cafeteria. The voting times in the district towns on Janaury 25 are as follows: Milo- Sam to 8pm; Brownville- 12:30 pm to 6:00 pm; Atkinson-10:00 am to 6:00 pm and LaGrange- 8:00 am to 8:00 pm.

We hope you will vote "yes" to support our plan on January 25, 2011. Thank you.

Sincerely,
MSAD # 41 Board of Directors
