We had a successful five week summer reading program.  Thirty-nine children signed up and participated.  The number of books read between independent and family readers totaled 751 books.  We had a fun party downstairs in the library on the last Friday of the program with balloons, drawings, drinks and Elaine’s Bakery goodies.  Congratulations to all the children who participated.  The message from us is to keep on reading! We wish to thank the weekly Wednesday afternoon readers (the kids loved it). Also, thank you Maine Community Foundation for the grant to purchase books for the program.

We at the Milo Library have started preparing for the upcoming children’s Summer Reading Program and the theme this year is, ‘Every Hero Has A Story’. Sign up week is June 15th – 19th and the program is from June 22 nd – July 24th. A volunteer has been helping with making posters and getting them to the local elementary schools, along with information for the parents about the program. We had the pleasure of having the author, Joan Calder from Santa Barbara, California visit us this week.  She spoke at the Milo Garden Club and the topic was monarch butterflies.  She is also a horticulturist and garden designer. She travels the U.S. to educate the public about monarch migration and the importance of preserving their habitat.  Joan donated a children’s book that she signed to the Milo Library called Airplanes in the Garden which was published in 2011.  It tells of the monarch’s beginnings as an egg through the butterfly stage.  The story is awesome.  The watercolor illustrations by Cathy Quiel are beautiful.  Thank you, Joan.
